Here are the first painted stones of the new batch. It’s already been a year since I have done this so I felt the need to use two techniques that have given interesting results on stone.

The first one is the spirit of these and the black ones are the grandchildren of those.

Voici les premiers cailloux peints du nouveau lot. Étant donné qu’il y a déjà un an que j’ai travaillé sur ce support, j’ai ressenti le besoin d’utiliser deux techniques testées précédemment et qui fonctionnent bien sur la pierre.

La première pierre est dans l’esprit de cette série, et les galets noirs sont les petits-enfants de ceux-là.

Three things that made me happy last week

Finally got my copy! :-)  ::  J'ai enfin reçu ma copie!

1. I finally received my copy of the book Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals! The first one got lost in the mail. I love it and can’t wait to try the “Creatures on wood” and the artist’s book projects.

1. J’ai finalement reçu ma copie du livre Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals! La première a été égarée quelque part entre la maison d’édition et mon bout de campagne. Je l’adore et j’ai très hâte d’essayer les projets “Créatures sur bois” et le livre d’artiste.

2. My friend Marc brought back more pebbles from Gaspésie, a bowl full of experiments is awaiting! See a few examples here, here and there of what I have done with the first batch.
Of course, the forecats had to “inspect” it.

2. Mon ami Marc m’a rapporté de nouveaux galets de Gaspésie. J’aurai l’occasion de tester de nouvelles choses! Vous trouverez quelques exemples ici, ici et de ce que j’ai fait avec le premier lot.
Bien entendu, les chats contremaîtres ont ressenti le besoin d’inspecter le nouvel arrivage.

Birthday party :: Anniversaire

3. We celebrated my goofy sister’s birthday this weekend. Good friends, good food, good time!

The weekend was busy, but I found time to play with my new liquid acrylics. I’m in the midst of testing how it reacts on different kinds of paper, when combined or superposed, etc. I think this medium will become a favourite of mine pretty quickly! The colours are bright and I can work on different layers without smudging what’s underneath.

La fin de semaine a été bien occupée, mais j’ai trouvé le temps de jouer avec mes nouvelles acryliques liquides. J’ai testé leur façon de réagir sur différents types de papier et lorsqu’elles sont combinées ou superposées. J’ai l’impression qu’elles vont faire partie de mes médiums favoris! Les couleurs sont lumineuses et je peux travailler en superposition sans étaler les couches précédentes.

This is what fall looks like around here, with its share of creatures (sheep, wild turkeys, horses), but I never thought I would find a monkey on our road.

Invasion

Since becoming an iPhone user, I have developed a couple of addictions, like Instagram. I have found it to be an endless source of inspiration.

Like the beautiful photos from @Wattland, especially two wasps that I can’t get out of my mind. Her photos are a perfect mix of texture, blur and light. They seem to be moving very delicately.

It looks like I am creating an army of insects: it’s only my attempts to capture the essence of Wattland’s pictures. I am not there yet, but this challenge has stimulated me! I have to find a way to render this. I hope I will be able to show you a satisfying end result soon!

Most of this month’s inspiration revolves around the use of bold dark shapes, with just a touch of colour or texture. Very different atmospheres, all unique, all beautiful!

Imperfection or unsatisfaction?

For my second post on the “one year anniversary recapitulation” theme, I was going to write about imperfection, but after a while, I realized that the adjective “unsatisfied” came out more often.

I am not a perfectionist. Not when it comes to drawing anyway. I create for the pleasure of it and because it brings me balance.

So, where does the dissatisfaction come from if not from imperfection?

Like I said before, drawing brings me balance; I rarely feel unsatisfied when I create. But whenever I do, it’s usually because of one of two things:
1.   It came out nothing like I had in mind;
2.   It was technically flawed, beyond what I could live with.

Number one happens more often. I sometimes have a vivid image in my head of what I want to draw. So vivid that the real drawing can’t live up to it. Some other times, even if the end result is different than what I had planned, it surprises me (in a good way). I don’t know why.

On another note, sometimes, things that appear quite imperfect I love the most. They started on a scrap piece of paper, I was not expecting anything out of it but yet, here they are, very imperfect but satisfying, like the two pieces below.

Uncertainty

It has been a little over a year since I started this blog. Looking back at things, I am not sure how far I have come. I still feel uncertain, my work is as imperfect as it used to be (so is my English! :-)), but I keep on creating. I might have skipped a week here and there, but I managed the time to draw. Isn’t that good? Well, for me it is!

In the next posts, I will try to recap a couple of thoughts/feelings that went round and round in my mind during the past months. First of them is…

Uncertainty: “Situation where the current state of knowledge is such that (1) the order or nature of things is unknown, (2) the consequences, extent, or magnitude of circumstances, conditions, or events is unpredictable, and (3) credible probabilities to possible outcomes cannot be assigned. Although too much uncertainty is undesirable, manageable uncertainty provides the freedom to make creative decisions. See also risk.”

In one of my first posts, I wrote about the white page syndrome and how the inkblot technique helped me out. I am not intimidated anymore in front of a blank sheet, but I am still not sure if what I draw is “me”. The closest I felt to this was with the inkblots. No need to think; just let go, observe and adjust. But I needed to go beyond this, in places less comfortable.

I envy those artists whose work you see and you can always say it came from them. I do not feel like I am there yet.

Or maybe “me” is an eternal explorer? Is that so bad?
