The April Challenge

Ink on paper, April 1, 2015

Why not take a little challenge to kick spring off?

I’ve decided to create something new every day of April: a drawing, a decorated pebble, a collage, etc.

I’ll post the results every Sunday but in the meantime, here is my very first drawing of the month!

Lac des sept frères, QC - La Datcha

A souvenir from a few years ago, at the Lac des sept frères, in the Vérendrye Park in Quebec. We went canoe-camping for a few days. Even if I like winter, I sometimes dream of swimming in a big deep blue lake early in the morning, while the loons are singing…

La Datcha’s new skin

I decided to start this year with a new skin and a slightly different organization for my blog. Cordonnier mal chaussé we say in French (poorly shod shoemaker): I spend so much time working on other people’s websites that I didn’t feel the urge to spend my evenings modifying mine. But at the same time, it hurt my eyes every time I looked at it. Now it’s almost done; it just needs a few more tweaks. I hope you’ll feel comfortable in this new ride!

The changes are not radically different; I quite like the conventional navigation of this type of blog, but I wanted something that had a bit more “space”. A good category cleanup was also on my to do list, plus a new page “Work” to keep track of what I consider important steps in my creation process.

Apart from programming, when I did sit down at the drawing table, it was to experiment with color and to play around with recycled bits that have been waiting in a box with other leftovers. I had planned to use the leaves in a collage for the DIY iHanna’s postcard swap, but they didn’t fit in. I haven’t found exactly what to do with these, but it was fun to arrange them in various montages.

Roupie the Mittens

I know it’s a bit late for this, but I wish you a fantastic 2014! I hope this year will be fulfilling and inspiring.

Hello and welcome to La Datcha!

This blog is about my journey back into a not so virtual creation (read more about it here). On this blog, I share my explorations, ideas, work and inspiration.

Frozen

Frozen. Litterally.

It started a couple of days before Christmas. The temperature rose to minus one and it started to rain, and rain, and rain. During the night, it froze. When this occurs, it’s usually followed by power failures. We were lucky that our street had to do without electricity for only one day. Others were without for a week, even when the temperature dropped to minus twenty. read more…

Happy Holidays!

2014 is almost here! Click here to see my “Happy Holidays” animated card!
Oh, and turn on the volume; there’s a nice song (à bicyclette) from Yves Montand.

First peak at the postcards for the DIY swap

I started to work on the postcards for the swap during the weekend; therefore, they’re a little bit Halloween inspired! This time, it’s acrylic and collage on paper pages from an old book. I like the way they add texture and rhythm to the cards.

Paper leaves

The first thing I did was to paint and cut these paper leaves, but they did not fit on the test card. My idea did not come out as planned and I had to start over twice, with an end result that was completely different from what I had in mind.

I also had fun with the leaves I collected a few weeks back.

Elsa Mora just launched a brand new blog about papercutting, and it’s already filled with lots of beautiful artworks!
