Acrylic on paper
And this week’s quota of drawing for HelloEverySunday.tumblr.com
I’ve added a description of the process for making these birds below, in the comments, and here is a picture of the step right before I start adding the white:
Hi, I hope I’m not being bothersome. I found your blog via Priya’s, and have been following your HES postings, and am also in love with your pottery–you seem able to do everything! I wanted to ask about these blue/black birds you have posted–I am curious about the process. Are you using acrylic inks or acrylic paints? I have been teaching myself with acrylics, but have not seen these kind of transparent layerings –and the combination of an almost watercolor effect and an ink effect together flummoxes me.
Thank you for your lovely posts :)
Hello Zoe, you’re not being bothersome at all! I also like when people show or explain their process ;-).
For these birds, I used a mix of liquid acrylics and some that are closer to a paste. I don’t prefer one or the other; I use what I have on hand! I thin the paste and use it as if it was watercolor or ink.
I started by applying a transparent coat of a medium blue, followed by more opaque layers of darker hues on the birds. I then applied a coat of transparent white on the background to get more contrast and touches of white on the birds for a bit of light and texture.
Thank you so much :). I have to say, it really comes across as magic, but I will try it anyway :D
